Lights - Everybody Breaks a Glass.

One of my favorite Canadian electro-pop princesses is back. I am (mostly) in LOVE with the new Lights song, but there is good and bad. The good: It’s harder and crunchier than anything on her debut album, which is exactly the direction I was hoping she would go in. I love the way her sweet voice plays such contrast to the dirty bass lines in this tune. I’m sad she didn’t play this live when I saw her a couple months ago. According to her tweets, the new album is finished and will be coming late in the year. Woot woot.

The bad: this whole throwing an ANNOYING RAP BRIDGE in the middle of a gorgeous pop tune is a practice that has to go. I don’t know who Shad & Holy Fuck are, but I know they basically ruin this song. I look forward to finding a non-rap version so I can enjoy it properly. It wasn’t ok with Natalia Kill’s “Free” and it’s NOT okay here. Grrrrr. If producers/record companies think throwing a rap onto a synth-pop song is going to make said synth-pop song appeal to hip-hop/RnB listeners, especially with someone like Lights, how the hell do they have their jobs? Same deal vice versa, do they think us pop-loving Lights fans are going to listen to this and feel compelled to further check out whoever the hell Shad & Holy Fuck are? I. Think. Not. /end rant
