Darren Hayes - Blackout the Sun.
HELLO TUMBLR! As Kylie would say “it’s the truth, it’s a fact, I was gone and now I’m back.” Summer is officially over, and so are my vacations, and my binge drinking. My Tumblr hiatus is also over now and I’m eager to get talking about all the fantastic music happening right now. Thanks for sticking with me and all the lovely messages you’ve left.
So, we’ve heard three songs from the new Darren Hayes album so far. They have all been released in different countries at different times and it’s all a bit confusing. This track is definitely my favorite of the three. While “Bloodstained Heart” is gorgeously crafted and “Talk Talk Talk” is practically a perfect pop song, I just prefer the vibe and darkness in this tune. The second half of the chorus is what really pulls me in, he croons: “Now all the love’s gone / and nothing grows here / and I just feel wrong / so blackout the sun / and all that we share / will slowly disappear / there’s a hole where my soul used to grow / so just blackout the sun”
Tear-jerking stuff. Then at the 3:15 minute mark Darren reminds me why I love him the most, letting belt with that crushingly beautiful voice.
Part of what I really like about Mr Hayes’ new material is that is he has not taken the route of an all-electronic tears-on-the-disco-floor sound, like many other male pop artists have. Not that there’s anything wrong with the tears-on-the-disco-floor sound. I love that shit. Yet Darren’s new songs have a very acoustic/electro-pop sonic thread running through them, with real strings and live instruments. I feel these three new songs we’ve heard so far sound a lot more like Savage Garden than any of the solo material on his last two albums have. I freaking LOVVVEE Savage Garden. Still.
So excited for the new album, titled “Secret Codes and Battleships.”
